SHS Kicks Off School Year with Homecoming Spirit Week

SHS Kicks Off School Year with Homecoming Spirit Week

From September 23 to September 27, school spirit flooded the halls of SHS as homecoming approached. This year, students participated in America Day, Dynamic Duo/Character Day, West Coast Wednesday, Class Color Day, and, of course, Green and Gold Day. To round out the week, students, parents, and teachers gathered at the newly renovated Boyle Athletic Complex for the homecoming football game.

Monday, students got patriotic and decked themselves out in red, white, and blue for America Day. It was also the first day students could catch a look at the class murals, which each grade’s council had painted on the windows of the hallway and cafeteria the week prior.

Tuesday, students dressed up as their favorite characters and dynamic duos, some coming to school in full costume. Some iconic groups included Gru and his minions, Alvin and the chipmunks, Mario and Luigi, and the Powerpuff Girls. The list goes on!

Wednesday, students embraced their inner surfer dudes for West Coast Wednesday, dressing in floral button downs and sunglasses. This year’s homecoming courts were voted for on Tuesday, and then announced on Thursday.

The Junior Court consisted of Shane Trainor, Ryan Cavanaugh, Cody Trost, Jessica Ross, Reese Rossi, and Camryn Routolo, and the Senior Court included Julian Lazaro, Ben Cicchitelli, Joseph Sala, Sophia Correnti, Natasha Swierad, and Sophia Lama. Finally, Mr. Blanchard, Mr. David Thibodeau, Mr. Trudeau, Ms. Barletta, Ms. Hogan, and Ms. Armstrong made up the Faculty Court.

Thursday was the clash of classes, the most anticipated spirit day of all. Each class wore tie-dyed shirts with their grade and graduation year on the front and back, with each grade assigned a specific color. Freshmen wore purple, Sophomores wore orange, Juniors wore blue, and Seniors wore red. Each grade decked themselves out in their designated color, with colorful beads, face paint, and other accessories on head to toe in hopes of being the most decorated class.

Friday was the long-awaited green and gold day, where every student showed their Sentinel Pride by dressing in the school’s colors. The annual homecoming pep rally took place at the end of the day, and had a number of events.

First, the chorus and band performed the national anthem, illuminating the new teachers of the music department as well as their talent and hard work. Then, the fall sports teams walked out, including football, boys’ and girls’ cross country, girls’ tennis, and boys’ and girls’ soccer.

The Seniors of the football team then walked out with the teachers they gave their jerseys to, the cheer team performed their routine, and their seniors performed their annual teacher/student dance, and soon the games were underway.

This year, games included the ping pong tissue box challenge, tug of war, skin the snake, dizzy doubles, and toilet plunger and bouncy ball races. The games are never easy and are a fun but competitive way to end the week.

Faculty Royalty was also announced at the pep rally, with this year’s royalty including Mr. Blanchard and Ms. Hogan.

Friday night, the long-awaited football game started at 7:00 p.m. with a theme of green and gold. At the game, the cheerleaders performed their incredibly fun and energetic halftime show, the football team played—and won, 42-7—an amazing game, and the Senior Royalty was announced. This year’s Senior Royalty was Joseph Sala and Sophia Correnti.

Saturday evening, the homecoming dance was hosted in the school gym. This year marks the second year of a semi-formal homecoming dance, and it was a success yet again!

Much like the dance itself, homecoming spirit week was incredibly fun and successful, and was a great way to kick off the year. This week was just the start of the spirit, fun, and school year that’s about to come.
