Letter From The Editor – May 2024

Dear Smithfield Times readers,

Local softball player Claire Barrett shows us that she is ready for anything life throws her way—especially on the softball field. She works hard to hone her skills at a recently opened training center here in Smithfield. Paul Lonardo spoke to the owners/operators and Mark Carrier shot photos of the facility that is sure to be a hit to all softball and baseball players in our community. Meet some members, as well the friends behind the operation, in this month’s issue.

Speaking of activities, Paul also spoke to our friends at the Smithfield Senior Center who are excited to announce the inaugural summer games set to take place in June. Read about the upcoming event and see if you’d be interested in signing up to participate in the fun!

Joe Siegel has the recap of the faceoff between Smithfield’s first responders this month. Smithfield Fire Department and Smithfield Police Department played a friendly game of hoops in March to raise money for a local cause. The second annual charity event brought many townspeople together for a great cause.

Lastly, Smithfield Times high school correspondent Sydney Briggs covers the Smithfield/Coventry/Moses Brown girls’ hockey championship win that took place earlier this year. Congratulations to these talented student athletes!

Happy Mother’s Day to my mom Karen, and every mother and mother figure in town. We love you!

Warmest regards,

Brittni Henderson
