Dear Smithfield Times readers,
I am writing this on a dreary October afternoon. The sky is gray, and the air is damp with the remnants of a rainy morning. I’d usually commiserate about the less-than-ideal weather, but there’s something special about this day in autumn. The bright gray sky is the perfect backdrop for viewing fall foliage. When I look around outside, the orange, red, and yellow colors of almost-fallen leaves seem brighter and more effervescent.
The change in colors is a reminder of the colder months to come, but while they’re still hanging on, they’re also a reminder of the beauty that is all around us.
Our cover story, written by Paul Lonardo, highlights a touching “pass the torch” moment between Smithfield High School athletes and their kindergarten successors. It was a truly memorable moment for parents and students alike.
Smithfield High School correspondent Sydney Briggs and Smithfield Times Sportswriter Dan Pieroni provided stories with different perspectives about this year’s homecoming events and game, respectively.
Joe Siegel spoke with newly promoted Deputy Police Chief Michael Smith about his new role and what this new role includes.
Finally, Brie Finch has a spook-tacular story of a local Smithfield boy who went above and beyond to decorate his yard for Halloween. Not only was the yard a fun place for locals to visit, but he also used it as an opportunity to raise money for a charity close to his heart.
As a reminder, Election Day is Tuesday, November 5. Early voting is ongoing until Monday, November 4. There are many ways to cast your vote. Whether your mail your ballot, vote early in person, or show up on Election Day—your vote matters!
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! See you next month!
Warmest regards,
Brittni Henderson
