On Your Feet! The Emilio and Gloria Estefan Broadway Musical will be on stage at the Providence Center for the Performing Arts (PPAC) from January 30 to February 4. Sixteen of the 28 member Broadway cast will be joining the production.
Based on the life of Gloria Estefan, a seven time Grammy winner, and her husband Emilio a 19 time Grammy winning producer, musician, and entrepreneur, the show will star Christine Prades as Gloria and Mauricio Martinez as Emilio.
Gloria Estefan has sold more than 100 million records and performed to sold out audiences at concerts and stadiums around the world, but she began as a totally unknown talent who was at first reluctant to even pursue a musical career. There is much more to her ascension to celebrity than numbers and public acclaim.
The journey of Gloria and Emilio from Cuba and the Little Havana section of Miami to incredible entertainment success is as inspiring as it is improbable.
The road from obscurity to the top of the charts does not proceed in a straight line for them by any means. Adversity in the form of family dissension and obstacles in getting their music heard slow their progress, but theirs is a sound and a style that won’t be denied. Even a horrendous bus accident that leaves Gloria with a broken back and the possibility she won’t walk again can’t stop their phenomenal rise to worldwide popularity.
Their story is told through their hit songs using what has been described by the AP as “smoking hot choreography and a tear-it-up band.”
The music is irrepressible and infectious. David Rooney in his review of the Broadway production for the Hollywood Reporter wrote: “the story is packed with heart, above all in its tender depiction of the couple’s sustaining love. And there’s such genuine joy — plus a refreshing suggestion of modesty — in the telling of this Cuban-American success story.”
Charles Isherwood writing for The New York Times said: “the flavor is fresh in this undeniably crowd-pleasing musical.”
According to promotional releases from the producers, Christine Prades was born and raised in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents. She understudied the role of Gloria in the Broadway production of On Your Feet! Mauricio Martinez is an award-winning actor and recording artist who stars in NBC Universo’s first original scripted TV series “El Vato.”
On Your Feet! was written by Academy Award winner Alexander Dinelaris and is directed by two-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell.
Multiple Grammy Award-winning musicians from Miami Sound Machine will be on the national tour of On Your Feet!
