The Smithfield Stop & Shop just announced the results of the year-end Food for Friends campaign. Local shoppers helped Stop & Shop associates raise over $7,100 for families in our area.
Steve Turchetta, manager of Stop & Shop, presented the Saint Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at Saint Philip’s Church a check for $4,756.80 in addition to the 400 boxes of food donated during November and December. A separate donation of $1,500 was sent to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.
David McAuliffe, vice president of Saint Vincent de Paul, indicated that this generous donation would allow the Saint Vincent de Paul Food Pantry to acquire about 47,000 pounds of food for local families. Now in its 23rd year serving Smithfield residents, the Pantry saw an 83 percent increase in individuals served in 2015.
Any area resident in need of food is invited to visit the Pantry any Wednesday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., or any Saturday between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The donation by to “our friends at Stop & Shop, we will have plenty of food to share with them,” according to a press release issued by the pantry staff.
